The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has introduced a new system allowing users without static IP addresses to register virtual private networks (VPNs) using their mobile numbers.
In an official statement issued on Saturday, the PTA highlighted that the initiative aims to simplify VPN registration, particularly for the IT sector. The authority revealed that over 31,000 VPNs have already been registered under its system. To facilitate the process, users are encouraged to complete their VPN registration through the PTA’s official website.
This development comes in the wake of the PTA’s efforts to address security concerns by regulating VPN usage. Initially, the authority announced a November 30 deadline for VPN registrations, but it later decided not to block unregistered VPNs immediately after the deadline, extending the registration period to allow more users to comply.
Earlier, the Ministry of Interior had planned to deactivate all unregistered VPNs by mid-November but granted an additional two weeks for users to complete the registration requirements.
VPNs, which are commonly used worldwide to bypass internet restrictions and ensure data privacy, have seen increased adoption in Pakistan. This surge followed the government’s ban on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) earlier this year, citing national security concerns.
The VPN registration process involves filling out an online form and providing specific details such as the applicant’s computerized national identity card (CNIC), company registration credentials, and tax-related information. Freelancers are required to submit proof of their professional engagement, such as emails or letters confirming their association with a project or organization.
Applicants must also specify the IP address they intend to use for VPN access. For those requiring a static IP address, it can be obtained through their Internet Service Provider (ISP), as outlined by the PTA.
